The First Generation/Working Class (FGWC) Club is designed to support students who come from social and economic backgrounds different than the majority of Whitman students. Our mission is to provide resources for students to thrive in college as well as create a strong network among FGWC students. We come together to talk about our personal experiences in safe spaces and embark on projects which aim to break the silence and stigma surrounding our FGWC backgrounds.

First Generation is a self-identifying term. It means that a student’s parents/guardians did not attend college or receive a college degree.

Working Class is a broad term used by many individuals from a variety of educational levels, occupations, incomes, and geographic locations.  Class is a result of a combination of factors: race, gender, religion, social and economic power, lifestyle, and culture.
